Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the blow of this disaster.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you encounter situations so terrible that you can't help but burst out chuckling. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of destruction and just gives up, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you realize that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You start ruminating about the nature of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, consuming entire villages in its wake. Buildings collapsed like fragile toys, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath wreckage, their fate uncertain. The magnitude of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to grapple a future forever altered.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, fighting against time and hazardous conditions to rescue those still alive. The global community watched in horror as the full extent of the disaster revealed itself, offering support to the afflicted population.
Dreadful Day Ever
It all started with my case of bedhead hair. I couldn't make it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and dropped my read more lunch all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for school.

By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
